Weekend Wrap-Up

What's up, y'all! How have you been? How is your momma, daddy, and babies? I'm pretty good. This weekend, CL and I braved the gas shortage here in Atlanta and got out in the streets. Friday night, we met at Dave & Buster's for drinks. Didn't realize that it was the meet and greet spot until I walked up in there and saw that the bar was packed with half-drunk folks. People can't possibly know how much of a fool they look when they drink too much. It was cool though. We had our drinks and then played a few games before checking out.

Every once and a while CL and I like to do something cultural. This weekend, we caught a performance of an August Wilson play, "Radio Golf" at the Alliance Theater. Great play! It starred Chad L. Coleman. Many of you may know him as Cutty from The Wire. CL, being a non-fan of The Wire, didn't know who he was but when he took off his shirt in the play, she was in love. LOL! Actually, the company is performing two of August Wilson's plays. The other one is "Gem of the Ocean". Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to see that one. The plays are the last two in the playwright's century series. I'm sure I've talked about my love for Mr. Wilson's work on The Playground before but I want to make sure black folks go out and support this man's work.

Yesterday, we went to see Spike Lee's latest film, Miracle at St. Anna. I truly enjoyed the movie and the performances of Laz Alonzo and Derek Luke. It had all the signature items of a Spike Lee movie; soundtrack, camera movements, and familiar faces. For me, that's a good thing. It's like hanging out with an old friend. The opening of one of his films used to be a major event in Black America. Now, it goes by quietly while folks flock to see that hot mess that Tyler Perry puts out. I just don't get it.

What did you do this weekend?

I've never seen an August Wilson play but I will be sure to try to get out to one when they come to Chicago. I really want to see the new Spike Lee Joint, I think that Derek Luke kid has a lot of talent.

See Tyler (even though I do appreciate his movies and efforts to get black entertainers working) plays into a lot of the stereotypes and that is a comfortable "norm" for them. To see a movie with a voice as powerful as what Spike creates takes them out of their element. Hollywood would much rather see us whooping and hollering.

t - i am mad that i didn't get to see the other play. i guess they were both intertwined with the grandson and grandfather.

iamme - definitely, check out the plays when they come to chicago. i agree with you about tyler perry and the stereotypes but spike has been his own worst enemy too. some of his films have been too self-indulgent and heavy-handed. i still love 'em though.

gg - do you know where the doctor keeps his prescription pad....please! lol

eb - nothing wrong with getting the good word and watching some football. reading your blog, we all know about your love of the spirits. lol
