Leave It Behind

I found this in my inbox this morning. It is just a little food for thought to take into the new year.

This week's topic: What do you need to leave behind?

Dear Friends,

In preparation for a New Year, I invite you to start 2009 by leaving
some things behind. I challenge and encourage you each week to take
steps toward your vision, to dream a bigger dream, listen to your life,
and focus on what's truly important to you. To do that, you must first
ensure that you have a strong foundation on which to build your best
life. That means making a fresh start, if necessary.

There is no point in building a vision on a foundation muddied with
unfinished business, unresolved issues, hurts and regrets because the
vision will not be fully realized. Now is the best time to let go of any
attitude, project, relationship, or issue that weighs you down or
impedes your progress towards a more purposeful and joyful life.

In Philippians 3:13, the apostle Paul talks about "forgetting those
things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are
ahead." What things do you need to leave behind? Make a list this week
and choose not to carry certain things into 2009.

Here are a few examples to get you started:

- Projects and activities that you are not passionate about.
You don't have time to spend on things that really don't matter to you
anymore!
- "Friendships" that drain your energy, are not reciprocal or are just
plain abusive or inappropriate.
Love and respect others, and expect to be loved and respected in return.
Accept nothing less.
- "Wishing" and "regretting".
They do nothing to help you build a better future and leave you feeling
powerless to change your life.
- Grudges and unforgiveness.
They keep you stuck in the past and drain you mentally, spiritually and
over time, can even make you physically sick.
- A broken heart.
Choose to let go of what was, learn from the experience and start
focusing on a vision for your future!
- Failures and mistakes.
Don't wallow in them. Learn from them.
- Superficial status symbols.
Is it possible you need to let go of something that makes you feel more
important - a job title, a certain relationship, a material possession
you can no longer afford - so that you can pursue a more purposeful
path?
- Negative attitude.
Make a decision not to rain on your own parade. Stop embracing the
reasons you cannot have the life you want and start embracing the
reasons you CAN have that life.
- Procrastination!
Either get started, let the project go, or change the goal to something
more manageable. Don't burden yourself by dragging this old habit into
the new year.

These are just a few examples. Create your own personal list so that
your foundation for 2009 isn't cracked by negative influences, attitudes
or habits.
Then choose to leave these things in your past. It is an act of faith.
We hold on to the old because we are afraid to let go. Pray for the
wisdom to identify what you need to let go of and for the courage to
actually let it go. You will be delighted to see how God answers your
prayer!

My challenge to you this week:
Prayerfully make a list of what you will let go of. Over the next week,
take the steps necessary to begin the year with a slate clear of
whatever you've been holding on to - whether it is a simple decision, a
phone call you need to make, or a conversation you need to have, get the
ball rolling!

Journaling question:
What is most difficult for you to let go of? What will it take for you
to let go and move forward?

My answers: My fear of failure. Stepping out of my comfort zone and seeing that it isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Great year-ending post!

This year, I am letting go of my fear by embracing faith and an audacious hope. (Word to Pres Elect!)

Happy New Year Skoolboi!

Hey Skoolboi! today is my first time on your blog and I find today's topic very interesting. I was thinking about that last night. I have a few termites in my soul (grudges) and I thought that if I don't release them, I will not be able to free myself and move on to the next level. What you wrote gave me the extra push I need to believe in letting go even when I feel that these particular people have WRONGED ME in such crazy ways. Time to let go.

Happy new year to you and everyone else!

Great post, it gives me a lot to think about and to strive for.

I am not perfect, but I need to think about what I hold inside, then ask the question,

Does what I hold inside, hold me back?

My first time here, I'll be back!

I have a huge fear of failure that I am trying to quiet.
And stepping out of my comfort zone has held me back from going after many of the things I have wanted to do.

Now there is one other issue I am still grappling with. To move on or hold on is the question.

I like this post.

Of course I cannot let my Father go... it's like I refuse or something (tearing up gotta switch subjects)

Okay there's nothing else I need to give up for the 2008.

Yeah - liked this one. Timely (of course.) Words of wisdom (expected).

This truly was a visual reminder of the lessons that I learned in 2008. It was also motivation for the SexyCool Uncut of 2009.
