Passing Notes

What's happenin'! How is your weekend going? After last weeks drama, I have been relaxing this weekend. Checked out the Hawks beating the Nets last night but other than that I've been in the house. What did y'all get into?

It's Super Bowl Sunday! Are you going to a party or watching the game with friends, what? I may be the only one but I enjoying watching the game at home by myself. No silly questions from people who don't really follow the game, no drunk people making an ass of themselves and blocking my view of the screen, and no overpriced watered down drinks. I'm not really a fan of either team but I've always been the type to root for the underdog. Therefore, I'm rooting for the Giants which is not easy for someone from Atlanta where we hate all NY teams. Who you got?

Like many of you, I am huge fan of The Wire. Although I am convinced that it will leave me longing for more after the final episode, I am thoroughly enjoying this season. The death of Prop Joe has me shook because he was one of my favorite characters. Loved the way he was able to make others do his bidding and still get his money. There are three characters that have got to fall before the end of this season for me to be happy:

Marlo - This dude has no redeeming qualities at all. Plus I'm still mad about Bodie.
Cheese - What did Alonzo say, "Unloyal, bitch-made motherfucker!" Joe should have got rid of his ass when Omar stole the stash.
Kenard - Krush loves the kids but I can't stand that little fucker. He has got to go!

As you know, I am an avid reader and always looking for a good book. Lately I have been extremely disappointed with the material on the shelves at my local bookstore. You might call me bougie or a snob but I refuse to read all this ghetto literature (bullshit is what I call it). The titles are even offensive to me. Between My Thighs: An Urban Erotic Tale, Tennis Shoe Pimp and Thug Matrimony are some of the better titles that I've seen recently. Are y'all ready this stuff? I've decided that I'm going to go back and read or re-read some of the classics from the Harlem Renessaince. If you can put me on to some good books, please do!

Hate all NY teams why?

I missed the wire last night, but I was pissed about Prop Joe too...Marlo definitely has to get it.

LOL@ you wanting to "off" Kenard. At first I couldn't remember who he was, but then I googled him. Why you wanna get the kid killed off?

Seriously though...Joe SHOULD have gotten rid of Cheese. He needs to die a slow painful death.

Tennis Shoe Pimp? Ugh...I can't get into any of those books either.

Marlo is THE worst guy ever...ALMOST more horrible than Young Barksdale...

Diva - I can't really say why we hate NY teams but it has something to do with all the NYers who have moved down here talking about how it isn't like NY. As far as Kenard goes, keep watching this season and you will see. I've seen a couple more episodes than what has aired on HBO.

E - Young Barksdale? Are you talking about D'Angelo? Dude was a punk but he wasn't in Marlo's league. Yeah, I'm a reader especially black authors.

...you big....blog and board pimpin...buckeye supportin...zoe saldana fiendin'...

You mean you're not going to read Desperate Hoodwives!?!?!?! C'mon Dawg.

The demise of good literature is like the demise of good hip-hop. They're cousins.

What's up with your boy Omar acting like Batman just disappearing into the night?!?!?

It was great to see the Pats go down. Smug bastids. I could care less about the Giants but it's definitely a feel good story. Only 6 more months and once again it's on!

Good idea to go back and read the classics. However, there is some good stuff out there. You're just not going to necessarily find it browsing the shelves. Pay attention to sites like BackList APOOO Books, Mosaic Books, and AALBC. Shameless plug but at BackList we're always blogging about authors that are writing real literature.

I see that we enjoy some of the same authors. I LOVE DM Whetsone. Hands down, one of my fave authors. Anyway, I have a backlog of books that you wouldn't believe. Have you read Nathan McCall's THEM? Anything by Stephen Carter? Kalisha Buckhanon's Upstate? Hit me up offlist if you want some of the books on my to-read list. One of my favorite subjects :)

As far as the classics, some of HR period novels I read while getting my Masters:

Nella Larson - Quicksand/Passing
Jean Toomer - Cane
Claude McKay - Home to Harlem
Wallace Thurman - The Blacker the Berry
Carl Van Vechten N*gger Heaven
Zora - Their Eyes Were Watching God

clmike - I didn't say we hate the people just the teams.

Fresh - I 100% agree on that one. It is a shame what has happened to both.

Vivrant - I am checking out Backlist too. I saw a couple interesting things on there. You might have just made yourself my go-to person for books. I'll hit you up soon.

GG - Please tell me you are joking! I was thinking about writing down some of my misadventures but I've got to find time.

Diva - I'm waiting to hear when you are coming down this summer so we can hang out.

Magnolia - I saw that one but couldn't bring myself to giving it any more pub.

OMG- the Wire was crazy this week... I was partying with them last night and first thing I asked Omar was where the hell did you disappear too... he just laughed at me... also tried to get the scoop... Prop Joe gave up Marlo so you know he's going down... I just hope that Omar kills him before the cops get to him though... aaahhhh.... its getting so good... I can never wait until sunday...

I just finished Conception, the latest by Kalisha Buckhanon. I'm reviewing it for Mosiac Magazine (another good site to visit for book news). EXCELLENT. Put that and her first novel, Upstate on your list.

2008 is shaping up to be a great year for books. Our girl Dianne is FINALLY coming out with a new one. I'm TOO excited. Eric Jerome Dickey has his yearly book coming out. RM Johnson has another one coming out. Have you read him? I think you'd like his stuff (One of my faves is called "Love Frustration." LOL) Tanarieve (sp?) Due has another coming out this year too. Also, you MUST check out Erica Simone Turnipseed's A Love Noire and Hunger if you haven't already. I really think you would like her.

If you read any of these, let me know how you like them.
